Bosch / Continental DQ381 / DQ500 Gearbox Diagnostics – Your Go-To for DSG Mechatronics Issues

DSG DQ381 DQ500 Repair

The DQ381 DSG gearbox was developed as a more compact and lighter version of the DQ500, which translates to better fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions. You'll find it in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles built on the MQB platform, like the Audi A3, Skoda Superb, Seat Ateca, or Volkswagen Golf. Even with noticeable reliability improvements, these gearboxes are still prone to common design and component failures. Failures often hit the mechatronics unit of the DQ381 gearbox, especially in vehicles like the Volkswagen Tiguan.

Unfortunately, DQ381 / DQ500 mechatronic unit failures are pretty common. Symptoms can include things like losing odd gears, temporary or complete loss of drive, limp mode, or even a total inability to drive. Computer diagnostics will typically show clutch position sensor errors. And while you might be able to clear these codes initially, they'll keep coming back until the actual fault is fixed.

Common Fault Symptoms:

  • The transmission goes into limp mode (safety mode).
  • The gear indicator on the dash starts flashing, and relevant fault codes are stored in the control unit's memory.
  • Unable to select a gear

  • The transmission stays in one gear

  • Jerking during gear changes

  • Missing odd gears: 1, 3, 5, and 7

  • In vehicles equipped with a Start/Stop system, you might occasionally experience an engine restart lockout, which means you can't engage a gear or change driving modes.

  • Sometimes, the transmission's full functionality comes back after you cycle the ignition (turn it off and on again).

  • Often, this fault pops up after the vehicle warms up or after a longer drive.

The 7-speed DSG DQ381 and DQ500 (0GC / 0DL) transmissions, featuring a Bosch control unit as used by VW, are electronically controlled dual-clutch gearboxes. You'll find them in many VAG group vehicles.

Since 2016, they've been gradually replacing the older 6-speed DSG DQ250 (02E) transmission in newer models.

Common Faults/Errors for DQ381 / DQ500 Transmissions

(diagnostics and repair available here)

  • P0805 – Clutch position sensor malfunction

  • P1735 (10666) – Clutch position sensor 1 – Electrical fault

  • P1736 (10668) – Clutch position sensor 2 – Electrical fault

DQ381 / DQ500 Faults Where the Cause is Vehicle-Related

  • P0C29 (35494) – Transmission auxiliary hydraulic pump

  • P175D – Clutch 1 spontaneously opens

  • P176E – Clutch 2 spontaneously opens

  • P0928 – Shift lever interlock solenoid – Open circuit

DQ381 / DQ500 transmissions utilize a wet clutch design (meaning they operate in an oil bath). This setup ensures better cooling and a longer lifespan for the components.

These transmissions are built to handle a maximum torque of up to 420 / 600 Nm, which means you'll find them paired with a wide range of engines, even powerful ones like in the VW Golf R.

Possible Fault Codes:

  • P1735 (10666) – Clutch position sensor 1, electrical fault
  • P1736 (10668) – Clutch position sensor 2, electrical fault
  • P0607 (10925) – Control module implausible signal
  • P0805 – Clutch position sensor malfunction
  • P0716 – Transmission input shaft speed sensor (G182)

Repair process for DSG DQ381/DQ500 control units:

  1. Initial Diagnostics:
We kick things off with a visual inspection and tests of the control unit to assess its condition and repair feasibility.

  2. Component Repair:
Our specialists meticulously repair the control unit and check it for any faults. For repairs, we only use branded components and systems from renowned manufacturers like Bosch and others.

  3. Final Testing:
Before shipping, we run final tests to ensure the control unit is working flawlessly and is ready for installation in the vehicle.
